In October 2025, FIRE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Governor and Health Director of Govisumber province. Govsiumber is location of Hepatitis Free Mongolia, Phase 3.
Govisumber was strategically selected for the long-term development of the “Hepatitis Free Mongolia” aimag-level HCV elimination model by FIRE Projects and its partners, due to its proximity to Ulaanbaatar, size, and diverse population. Its small population and close location to Ulaanbaatar will allow for the swiftest aimag-level results to inform policy, strategy, and provide a second proof-of-concept for the HCV elimination model as quickly as possible. Govisumber has a high migrant population due to its mining sector, unique climate, and the quadripoint of four other aimags, further adapting and testing the model to be prepared for future locations in Mongolia. From 2016 to 2020, Govisumber had the highest mortality rate from liver cancer of any aimag, 12 times the rate of Dornogovi (the lowest rate) and 2.3 times the rate of Dornod (the second highest rate).
