Medical Mission Trips, Mongolia
2005-2009
Beginning with our first trip to Mongolia in 1999, FIRE has continually conducted medical needs assessments at clinics and hospitals. In 2005, we expanded our winter clothing distribution program to include medical mission trips. Volunteer medical professionals from the United States traveled to Mongolia, distributing tons of medical supplies shipped in sea containers from Flagstaff with the winter clothing and other aid. The medical volunteers also conducted impromptu training based on the supplies provided and basic health safety and bedside training. Specialized training was also conducted in Ulaanbaatar on subjects including dermatology, general surgery, and palliative care.
In addition to the training in conjunction with supply distribution, FIRE also hosted several different medical groups for specialty training, including orthopedic surgical volunteers in Ulaanbaatar from Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps (NAVMC), Spine Care International, Australia and Lithuania to volunteer at the National Trauma and Orthopedic Research Center from 2007 to 2011.
