This is a Rotary only trip for Rotarians, potential Rotarians, and their families.

Join us for a special two-week trip in Ulaanbaatar, Bayan-Olgii and Khovd, Mongolia built around this project. Enjoy 10 days of sightseeing and travel in Mongolia and 5 days of volunteer Rotary work. The sightseeing includes a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay with an eagle hunter’s family in Western Mongolia, explore the Kazakh culture, and attend the world-famous Altai Eagle Festival. As a Rotary volunteer, you will take part in the Community Awareness Fair and opening celebration for “Hepatitis Free Mongolia, Phase 2”. Health care workers can help with health care worker training. There will also be opportunities to teach English and work with local community organizations.

Day 1         Sept 11            Full day in Ulaanbaatar (UB)
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia

Day 2         Sept 12            Full day in Ulaanbaatar (UB)
From our hotel, we will enjoy a casual walk through Sukhbaatar Square to the Museum of Natural History and Zanabazar Fine Art Museum. Continue walking to lunch and visit Choijen Lama Museum. In the evening we will watch Tumen Ekh, a cultural performance of Mongolian traditional arts and have our welcome dinner.

Day 3         Sept 13          Fly to Ulgii
Take a very early morning flight to Olgii and spend a leisurely day exploring the growing this growing, remote Kazakh cultural center.

Day 4–5     Sept 14–15     Altai Eagle Festival
We will spend two days enjoying the Altai Eagle Festival, with private traditional music and concerts during lunch. We will stay in a private ger camp along the Hovd River.

Day 6-8       Sept 16-18     Travel to Khovd
We will spend three days traveling to the site of Hepatitis Free Mongolia. It is an 8-hour drive that we spread out with stops to visit archeological ruins, do some hiking, ride horses and visit eagle hunters in their homes. We will be staying with local families for the two nights on the road in private gers that have been set up just for us.

Day 9-10     Sept 19-20      Volunteer in Khovd
Medical volunteers will help with the health care worker training for Hepatitis Free Mongolia. Everyone else will work with local community organizations to support their missions and/or help students practice their English.

Day 11       Sept 21            Community Awareness Fair and Opening Ceremony
We will spend the day setting up and enjoying the Opening Ceremony and Community Awareness Fair for Hepatitis Free Mongolia.

Day 12       Sept 22            Volunteer in Khovd
Medical volunteers will help with the health care worker training for Hepatitis Free Mongolia. Everyone else will work with local community organizations to support their missions and/or help students practice their English.

Day 13       Sept 23            Return to UB
We will travel an hour to the Olgii airport and fly back to UB. In UB we will spend the day visiting more local sights by car including Gandan Monastery, the 210-ton steel statue of Chinggis Khan outside UB and view the city from above at Zaisan Hill.

Day 14       Sept 24            Rotary Tour in UB
Spend the day with local Rotary Club member is UB visiting their projects and learning about the amazing work they are doing.

Day 15       Sept 25            Depart UB
Leave Mongolia for home

  • Prices include all in-country expenses: 3 meals per day, snacks, water, tea, lodging, permits, entrance fees, Mongolian and American guides, and all domestic transportation including jeeps and flights.
  • These prices do not include flights to and from Mongolia, alcohol, tips for guides, domestic overweight baggage fees or insurance.
  • The trip will have a minimum of 6 people.
  • We require you to have emergency evacuation insurance for your own safety in cases in of an emergency or need for medical evacuation. We can assist you in purchasing this. Travel insurance is also strongly advised.
  • You will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel.
  • All rooms in Ulaanbaatar are shared rooms. We will be staying at the Springs Hotel, a short 5-minute walk to Sukhbaatar Square, the center of Ulaanbaatar.
  • Lodging in Bayan-Olgii and on the way to Khovd will be in traditional Kazakh gers (yurts) shared with 1-2 other trip members. These will be gers that are set up specifically for our trip.
  • Lodging in Khovd will be in a hotel.
  • We plan our itineraries to the best of our knowledge, but please know that there may be unexpected changes. We will do our best to inform you and support you, but please be flexible.
  • A $200 non-refundable deposit is due April 15, 2019;
  • Full payment is due June 15, 2019.  With your full payment, we require the following documents:
    • Copy of passport
    • Copy of flight schedule
    • Signed liability release
    • Proof of emergency travel and evacuation insurance
